VenuG Presents: Prince RIP The Legacy that Prince left apart from Purple Rain?

Note: This post is written from his memories & does not refer to any Prince Song.
Reader could very well find that on Wikipedia.
But many facets of his, especially those of an incognito philanthropist, theologist & mentor, I'm sure would be missing there.
Errors could creep in as neither did I Google nor go to Rolling Stones or Wikipedia.
He won everything from an Oscar, The Golden Globe both for Purple Rain, half a dozen Grammy's & 3 or 4 MTV VMA .
He's a part of Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Hall of Fame & must be among the top 30 all time musicians in the list of Rolling Stones Magazines Top 500,Rock Artistes.
The top being The Beatles.
Not only.did he write, record sing originals produce movies, but also did cover great songs. The best two to my memory is
A) While my Guitar Gently Weeps by The Beatles
B),I'm a Creep by Radiohead at Coachella fsstival.
He was a multi talented , multi-instrumentalist musician who played many musical instruments & at times two instruments together . Guitar & Piano, Guitar & Harmonica. Guitar & Drums.
The only matching musician was Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones. But Jones died young. He played Guitar, flute , harmonica , Tabla, ukulele, Sitar. 

Also Prince was a Guitar virtuoso of the level of Slash, Clapton, Page, John Mayer.
His genres were Funk, Pop R&B & Psychedelia. 

His best remembered skill was, he was a pioneer in online music selling without use of media, record companies (with whom he had a love hate relationship) & PR. He dropped albums, for free. Some of his latter albums were 6 hour length impossible on a Vinyl record double set. He did things now tried by Rihanna & Kanye West who drop albums on iTunes. Remember there was no iTunes / Spotify when he started this in the 90s. He never moved to New York or LA the home of recording companies & his every music gig was better than a Broadway play like Jesus Christ Superstar or Bombay Monsoon. Staying in Minnesota he produced his own albums, distributed them.

He was a brilliant theologist who could quote from religious books of many religions. 

He was a performer of the Level of The Rolling Stones

Live Show designer like Madonna for whom he produced a Record. Carmen Electra (name Carmen was his suggestion.

&

Marketer like Rihanna.

To have all the above qualities in one individual is fluke of nature.

Plus he was a Music Mentor to many including Madonna.

He would suddenly invite musicians at odd hours at short notice & brainstorm, write & record albums. His late night post gig party invites are remembered by his fan. He also at times invited musicians to impromptu Jam sessions, which were know for their high quality music output. 


He is to be remembered for his flamboyant appearance as the likes of Freddie Mercury of Queen & Multi instrument playing skills like Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones, lastly for his extravagant live shows which never used recorded music backup & at times like a Broadway Musical. 

Legacy that Prince Left

VenuG Presents: How to travel when in Kolkata? Yellow Amby, Uber or Ola?

Radhika Nanda tweeted a Gustavo Petrol quote this morning, which goes like this

" A developed country is not a place where the poor have cars, it's place where rich use public transportation" 

Two days back, A Facebook friend Jeanne Kennedy Nanda, who is at Eton, but has studied at Frank Anthony Public School, where her late Dad taught, posted a picture of Delhi-Gurgaon(it could be Delhi-Faridabad DND flyover as well) 

Traffic Jam & Huge number of private cars on the road.

To which I replied thus

Me: Are you in Delhi Jeanne?

Jeanne: No VenuG whenever I am in Delhi, I shall meet you for sure

Me: 

Jeanne I refuse to buy a Car. 

Though I can

afford an SUV/Sedan 😀 

A) There's no

space to park in my official quarters. 

B) No

parking space anywhere.

 C) Suppose I go

shopping with Shree, I need to keep driving while

Shree shops. Or go to Malls where parking is 30

bucks an hour & the prices of commodities are

higher. 

D) I reduce pollution.

 E) Avoid traffic

jams. 

F) I myself drive a motorbike & slide past

traffic in a jiffy.

 G) During busy traffic days leave

my bike at home. Take an auto to nearest metro

station Jatin Das Park, get down & Central Metro

& Walk or take a tram(luckily Kolkata has one)

Tricks of trade. 

H) The only time I take a Cab is

when I go out with Shree!!!

I) For example, when I  last visited Jaipur , I

had a busy work day, and I had to come back home from work, which is 7 Kilometres, little distance at other places but tough for Kolkata(Dalhousie to Ballygunge through Metro channel known for its political rally traffic snarls & pack my luggage & only then go to Airport to catch my 20:40 Indigo flight(who are so punctual that they call it "Indigo Standard Time" I was late to start from office due to a last minute meeting & relieving party to a colleague who received sudden transfer order & relief instruction. As I am the branch head I had to be present. I took a Cab home thikthinking that there was enough time called my wife to pack couple of dresses.

There was a rally linked traffic jam. I got down from my Cab, ignored taking a bus,  I took a metro to Dumdum , then an auto, and then paid a private taxi Rs100 from Outside airport to Departure Terminal of Netaji Subhash Airport Domestic Terminal.

I reached the Airport in 35 minutes & had still 30 minutes spare time to check in. Normally at peak hours it takes 2 hours to Airport from my office.

Had I been snobbish & impractical I'd have missed the flight for sure.

bought luggage & clothes from Jaipur at

Rs5000(saved 800 Cab fare & 6000 flight. Even

David Cameron takes a tube. These ego's are

useless. One has to be pragmatic.

Modes of Transport In Kolkata

A) From Airport Cab only if neccesary (with new 110 Rupee parking fee)

Come out to main road a kilometre (travel light with a strolley bag or a backpack)

Take a bus. 

B) From Howrah/Sealdah Railway Station. 

Howrah come out cross the road take a Ferry across to Babughat from 8-8 Monday to Saturday 2-8 on Sunday. 

Sealdah Auto/Bus

C) Otherwise local mode 

I) Motorbike 

II) Mini/Blue/CSTC White/JNURM Volvo AC buses. 

III) Auto to nearest Metro/Circular Then Metro/Rail

Note during Bandh Rail is affected Metro NEVER. During Bandh Hartal Strikes Auto & Metro never stop. 

IV) in Old City Ballygunge to Kidderpore to Tollygunge to Esplanade to Mechua(Bars Bazaar) snail paved slow moving but moving anyway trams YES KOLKATA IS THE ONLY CITY WITH TRAMS.

V) Walk, Cycle, Unicycle, Pogo Stick small distances. In 700001-6 walk is the best & happiest way to commute & fastest. 😁😊😋😝😀

                       My sister called up and told me that, our 1st Landlord at Jaipur, Shri Khajan Singh Sharma , breathed his last, 3 days back, my day was ruined. Between 9th June 1969 & 1st October 1984 with a gap of around  2 years in between 1971 and 1972 when we were in Kerala , we My Parents, My sister and myself, and my cousin Vijayraghavan, lived in this house C-12, Moti Marg, Bapu Nagar, Jaipur 302004(later 302015) Rajasthan. The address, which I can never forget.

                  A tsunami of memories, Oh! Tears, Oh! Pain, Oh! Angst. The Feeling , which floods your mind, whenever, you remember the house, where you spent, your childhood, adolescence  days, youth, school days, college days, university days, where you fell in Love. Ah Moti Marg.:((( I miss that place terribly even now. The pang to return to your nest, your roots, where you became , what you are today.

   It was 9th June 1969, we landed in Jaipur, our truck unloading our household effects, there was a sense of pain, of losing your childhood friends, I was 9 then, I had 1 real friend, Atul Vyas, in Mahesh School Jodhpur, my classmate, my soul-mate, the one who used to hit birds with " Gulel " ( catapult / sling ) at Kabutar (pigeons) and Kamedi ( Dove), the one who gave me Keri Achar ( Raw mango pickle), who used to go with me to Rawat Mishthan Bhandar, Sardarpura, where we used to eat Mirchi Bada/ Makkhan Bada & Pyaz (Onion/Garlic) & Mawa ( Thickened Milk) Kachoris ( a fried Marwari dish) .

             Here I was all of 9 , silent, shy, innocent kid, dreamy eyed, I still remember the time, it was 07:00 IST. I was wearing a grey knicker, and a blue check bush shirt, sitting in the veranda, and there , in the opposite veranda was a 5 year something, holding the pillar, singing

                          The 1st day was spent, at the terrace, a huge house, had 8 tenants, behind the house was a huge Jamun Tree, it was June, and I still remember, Koel was singing, koo oo koo oo , peacocks were on the opposite house, Moti doongri was visible from House, I ate Jamuns, how many I dunno, maybe a kilo, the toungue was deep purple, 1st day food was from outside, Janta Store (Janta Store is still there, in Bapu Nagar, shop, now a Bakery shop, selling bread, biscuits and namkin, ice-creams, and the Central Market Bapu Nagar, is by practice, by us oldies of Jaipur, still called Janta Store and not Central Market. ) ke samosey, Paliwal ji ki dukan ke, God, may his soul REST IN PEACE, Mr Paliwal, was a retired army Jawan, and he ran a shop, out of his retirement funds, not much to write about, but samosey, waah, kya samsey the woh. Hot, fresh and hygienic. Mr Paliwal, later became, my childhood frrined Vakul, and now my brother-in-law Vakul's mentor, he was a great human being, used to guide young boys, well, in positive thinking.

Dad:                    So ja, abhi paanch bajein hain, buddhoo ( Go back to sleep, you dumbo, it is only 5 AM )

mE:                     To phir, yeh 5 baje, K.L.SAIGAL, kaun ga raha hai? (Then who is singing K.L.SAIGAL,
                           at 5 AM ? )

Who is a Busker?

                           A Busker is a Street Performer, a Street Musician, Minstrel, Troubadour who engages himself / or herself in any form of public entertainment,. Busking is the practice of performing in public places , for gratuities, which are generally in the form of money and edibles. 

                                   Performances can be just about anything that people find entertaining. Performers may do acrobatics, animal tricks, balloon twisting, fire breathing, card tricks, caricatures, clowning, comedy, contortions and escapades, dance, singing, fire-breathing, fortune-telling, juggling, magic, mime and a mime variation where artiste performs as a living statue, musical performance, puppetry, snake charming, storytelling or rcite poetry as a bard. street art such as sketching and painting, street theater, sword swallowing, and even put on a flea circus. In the morning MET spokesman said , " Monsoon,  was to hit Kerala coast on 1st June , though delayed by 4 days will hit Kerala , today 5th June , and it will be normal , set my mind on this blog post on Songs based on Rain.

    I just Googled  "Monsoon rains hit Kerala " and look what I found :-))) MONSOON HAD ACTUALLY HIT KERALA !!! MET is right thanks to weather satelites. Their accuracy is unquestionable. So lets hope it reduces prices and improves Sensex. .
